Execution Chronicles

Sam was recently in Texas, filming a documentary on the pending execution of double murderer, Mark Stroman.  Convicted of capital murder in 2002, Mark has spent the past 9 and a half years on death row, from where he wrote a blog Execution Chronicles.  In retaliation for the Sept. 11 attacks, Mark shot three South Asian men, mistaking them for Arab Muslims.  The story sparked intense media attention when the lone survivor of the attacks, Rais Bhuiyan, lead a call for clemency to spare Mark from execution.  Seven years in the making, this is an important documentary that will examine hate crimes, the death penalty, and one man’s redemption and another’s compassion.

Food television

Sam spent a month in San Francisco as DP of a new show for the Cooking Channel called Easy Chinese San Francisco with host Ching-he Huang.  It was a great month of long but rewarding days.  Stay tuned as it starts airing in August.  He still doesn’t know how to cook.  Best he can do is “heat up.”

Sam also served as Director of Photography on two different food shows.  The Cooking Channel is broadcasting Unique Sweets, a great program about tasty and unusual desserts.  13 episodes about pies, cakes and donuts.  Yes, he got fat.  And also airing throughout the country, Kimchi Chronicles, a 13 episode exploration of the cuisine of Sam’s motherland.  Hope you get to watch, and then you’ll understand the added weight.
